Job Title:                    Licensed Practical Nurse

Position Overview:    Under supervision of physician or nurse practitioner, provides direct care to patients in the clinic, exemplifies and oversees compliance with ethical codes of conduct and standards of care in nursing practice.

Qualifications:            This position requires a registered nurse with a current Alabama state license as a licensed practical nurse.  

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBLITIES:

  • Calls patients from waiting room in a courteous, polite manner.
  • Obtains height, weight, blood pressure, temperature, appropriate specimens, venipuncture and vision, when indicated, from patient in the clinic.
  • Obtains lab, x-ray, and other diagnostic reports from the hospital and patient chart.
  • Notifies patients of abnormals as directed by Physician or Nurse Practitioner.
  • Assembles appropriate education materials for patient i.e. diet counseling, lower back exercises. 
  • Follows up on missed appointments.
  • Inventories and orders clinic supplies.  Checks expiration dates monthly.
  • Prepares examination room for patient including sterile tray for surgical procedures.
  • Remove sutures and applies appropriate dressings.
  • Maintains strict patient confidentiality.
  • Records data in patient’s charts legibly.
  • Schedules outpatient testing and referrals to specialists by physician or nurse practitioner.
  • Pre-certifies procedures with insurance companies.
  • Completes laboratory requisition forms ensuring correct billing and insurance information is on form.
  • Recognizes and observes safety regulations.
  • Collects and documents physical, social, and psychological data systematically from all available sources, i.e., family, patient, records, etc.
  • Promptly notifies physician and/or nurse practitioner of situations requiring immediate intervention.
  • Assists with answering phone and scheduling patient appointments.  Refills patient medications by phone as directed by physician or nurse practitioner.
  • Administers and carefully documents medication administration including immunization, allergy injections, O2 and nebulizer treatments.
  • Functions as a liaison between patient/family and physician, CRNP. 
  • Represents a caring, friendly and professional attitude to the patient/family or public that he/she has contact with.
  • Follows established clinic policies and infection control program.
  • Assumes responsibility for self-improvement by attendance at in-service classes, staff meetings and education related to personal growth and departmental needs.
  • Ensures proper patient care is provided in a timely and effective manner.
  • Prepares and maintains clinical records for patients, ensuring that nursing entries are accurate, meaningful and concise.
  • Seeks out opportunities to teach safe nursing practices and develop subordinates to their greatest potential.

Monday – Friday 8 to 5

MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Must possess a current Alabama state license as a licensed practical nurse.
  • Must be a graduate of an accredited practical nurse or vocational nursing program.
  • Must comply with accepted professional standards and practice.
  • Must have good oral and written communication skills and be organized.
  • Interpersonal skills required to instruct patients and their families, as well as, professional interaction with a variety of clinic personnel.
  • A relatively high level of analytical abilities required in order to prepare nursing care plans, implement effective nursing care, and develop solutions to difficult problems concerning patient care& safety.
  • Ability to perform professional nursing care, resolves complex patient care problems, and effectively manages stressful situations.
  • Ability to walk and stand almost constantly, as well as, lift and position patients.
  • Knowledge of clinic policies and procedures, fire, safety, disaster plans and infection control policies.
  • Knowledge of patient rights.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Works in clean, air conditioned, general office environment.
  • Work requires standing and walking for long periods.
  • Work requires occasionally handling heavy patients.
  • Some sitting, stooping, kneeling, turning, pulling and lifting required.
  • Frequent phone activity.
  • Work requires hearing ability and visual acuity.
  • Subject to a fast paced, high stressed routine.
  • Possible bio-hazard exposure to communicable diseases.
  • Frequently assigned to changing priorities.
  • Normal patient care environment with little exposure to excessive noise, dust or temperature.
  • Subject to stress, frustration and fatigue.
  • May be subject to verbal abuse by patients and family.
  • Personal protective equipment is provided by the clinic and available for protection of personnel.
